Jersey Masts (British Channel Islands)
Welcome!

On this site I'll provide some details of where mobile phone masts are around the island. The official States webpage gives us a list but it's a bit vague.

You have a right to know because, as the States page currenly admits, the health issues are still sufficiently unknown as to make a precautionary approach valid. We just don't know for sure whether pulsed microwaves are safe or not, and there is enough evidence to be wary.

Each base station transmits constantly all day and night, and in the immediate surrounding area this will be by far the strongest radio signal, rapidly switching on and off at a rate used in natural biological cells' electrical activity. It's not the heating effect that concerns me (you would have to be VERY close for that) but this incessant pulsing of the strongest radio fields (compared to other background levels) at speeds slow enough to have possible effects. The jury is still out, but it's only since the early 1990s that the public have been exposed on a wide scale to such systems. Consider how long science took to discover that various other things are harmful (asbestos, radioactivity, thalidomide, smoking, etc). Previous analogue radio systems have either had constant power levels (FM) or randomly smoothly changing power levels (AM radio, TV). Note that if you decide to be wary of pulsed (so called "information carrying") radiowaves (try looking up ElectroSensitivity - some people do genuinely seem to become hypersensitive after prolonged high exposure) then you should also be wary of computer WiFi and domestic DECT cordless telephones too.

The JT and C&W networks are in place already, so my current concern is the Airtel network being installed at the moment. Visually the masts are even worse than the C&W mock telegraph poles, being considerably thicker with an even wider section at the top. They dominate an area as quite an eyesore. While the C&W poles largely fade into the background amongst trees down out of the way lanes, the new Airtel masts seem hellbent upon being as visible as possible! It just proves how the planning process has failed us - because I believe people will start to notice how badly placed this latest batch of ugly poles are, yet many of them have been approved already so it's too late to do anything about it. How were we supposed to know where they were going to appear? Most of the applications simply gave a field number and road name, but along a long road the precise location can make all the difference. It's bad enough that we don't get told whereabouts in a field it's going, but that supposes we know which field in the first place (and some of these haven't had any Site Notices on display that I've managed to spot). There is no easy way to find out field numbers, unless you visit the planning office or you happen to know where to look in the town library. Sure in this day and age we could have a more precise way to find out? An online way to locate the actual spots on a map? Too simple?!

Look at the state of this country lane now - Rue de Haut near Grosnez. Within the space of a few years it went from no masts at all, to three in an ugly group (and there's a spot above Rozel that shares this fate too). I'm glad I don't live nearby, I'd be fuming!
Here we see the new Airtel pole, a thinner JT pole, and the Sure C&W pole on the right. The Airtel pole is thicker because it has to accomodate three panel antennas for the 900MHz band, whereas the Sure pole has three thinner panels for 1800MHz hidden beneath its wood-effect cladding. The 1800MHz band has half the wavelength of the 900MHz band, so the antennas can be smaller. The JT 900MHz antenna fires equally in all directions (called omnidirectional) instead of dividing the surrounding area into three sectors as the other two operators at this site have done, so the antenna at the top of the wooden pole is a very thin one within a pipe-like tube.

Here's another one for any use you may have. It's based upon the States' tourist map, so if copyright is a problem then just fill in within the island outline to disguise its origins! (and if you think this looks bad, consider that C&W have just as many, in fact slightly more, and so do JT)
